NT Water Licence Amendments

13 January 2025

The Northern Territory Government has advised that anyone taking surface water or groundwater for a mining activity must hold a water licence granted under the Water Act 1992 by 1 August 2025.

There is a streamlined process available for existing water users to obtain a water licence under the Act.

To be eligible for this streamlined process, the applicant must:

  • have been taking water for a mining activity prior to 1 July 2019.
  • have continued taking water for a mining activity since 1 July 2019 until making an application.
  • be carrying out a mining activity in accordance with a mining management plan/environmental (mining) licence.

Processing an application takes time. Submit your application as soon as possible to ensure you are granted a water licence before 1 August 2025.

Not holding a water licence after 1 August 2025 may lead to enforcement action.
