WA Requirements for Rehabilitation and Prospecting Activities

1 October 2024

The Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) is reminding explorers and prospectors of the critical requirements for rehabilitating exploration and prospecting activities.

In their 2023/2024 compliance plan, DEMIRS inspectors continue to identify non-compliance with rehabilitation obligations. The most common issues include:

Rehabilitation not occurring within the time required by tenement conditions
Sample bags not being removed
Rehabilitation standards not being met.

Failure to comply can lead to enforcement actions such as forfeiture of tenure, monetary penalties, or even future Programme of Work (PoW) approval restrictions.

It’s essential for tenement holders and operators to be familiar with their obligations before, during, and after exploration activities.
